Studio IX & X- Fall 2013 & Spring 2014
Lebanese American University/ Byblos Lebanon

This final year architectural design studio is given as a full-year architectural thesis, with the first phase consisting of an architectural analysis of a different areas in Lebanon, followed in the second phase by architectural interventions that build upon the analysis.
The studio is supervised by Dr. Antoine Romanos, with the assistance of Tarek Zeidan.
The theme of the 2013-14 investigation was the "Extreme Site", each student picked an area with hard conditions, ( hard topography, social and political…). Started with data collection and followed by a site analysis, each student found a proper approach to tackle the site without harming the extreme in it.

The zoning shows that Nabatieh is mainly composed of residential and public institution. The Souk of Nabatieh is located in it center.

The plan and elevation drawing display the location of the old vernacular houses, the souk, the new residential building, public institution, school, universities, gas station, offices, religious place, banks and parking's. We can also notice threw the different typologies that nabatieh has different character.
we can conclude from the zoning study that Nabatieh citizen  has all what they need. what do they want?
The morphological study drawing shows  that Nabatieh is subjected to  delocalization. Hay el saraya, the first residential area of nabatieh is now a point on the map.
The city of Nabatieh has several historical and cultural landmarks. All of them with a unique  walking and social experience.

social and walking experience threw the corridors and roof of hay el saraya vernacular houses. The houses dated from the ottoman colonization. Neighbors interact threw corridors, terraces, window and courtyard. During the day, this area looks like a Theatrical play. Hay E­l Saraya is a dense area, however each house has a courtyard. In addition, people use to walk from roof to roof to access different area of the village.

Six different Architectural approach
The historical "Baydar" wish dated from 1948 and was used for several purpose threw out the years."Baydar" is physically en empty monumental piazza located in the center of Nabatieh. It is use by people for meeting purpose, event, manifestation, sport and theater."Baydar" is like a breathing membrane that extend it boundary every monday to welcome the traditional Monday Souk. The road adjacent to it are closed, and merchant put their merchandise either on the floor, wood table, or cars.
 Nabatieh is well known for its meat market. The oldest one is located in it center, at the right intersection between the "main souk road" and the "Endil road". The meat market is located in between two vernacular building. People who are not familiar to Nabatieh can't guess it location because it is hidden. it has 3 different entrance that give three different perspective.People meet their to eat and socialize. At the end point of the meat market, a huge empty area is used as parking for cars and buses.
Trials
From this analyses, we can conclude that Nabatieh citizen wants to express themselves. This is why they are using empty lots and empty courtyard as a way of theatrical expression. The project proposal will be an Art institute, that will include a theater, cinema, music and dance classes, exhibition space, artisana, restaurant, cafeteria.

 Third proposal:  Walking experience from the ground floor to the roof. inner courtyard and public staircases.
